What are the causes of oily skin? The causes are mainly genetic, i.e. the skin type is mostly determined by the individual's genetic make-up. However, it should be emphasized that the production of sebum is greatly influenced by sex hormones, it is no coincidence that male skin is generally oilier (as well as thicker) and female skin can present a different oiliness in relation to the phases of the menstrual cycle. In fact, it is the androgen hormones that stimulate the activity of the sebaceous glands.
However, even excessive cleansing and the use of unsuitable cosmetics can alter the hydrolipidic film of the most delicate areas and at the same time accentuate the hyperactivity of the sebaceous glands.
There are 5 types of oily skin: Oily : the sebum is oily to the eye and the skin appears shiny with dilated pores.
Seborrheic : the activity of the sebaceous glands is very abundant and the sebum considerably dilates the pores of the skin creating the typical appearance of the "orange peel skin".
Asphyxiated : the sebum is thick and waxy and therefore remains trapped in the follicles. This causes sebum, cellular debris and bacteria to remain trapped inside. From this occlusion comes the blackhead which can be closed (white dot) or open (black dot). In this case the skin does not appear greasy but dry and rough to the touch.
Acne-prone : this type of skin is characterized by the formation of pustules caused by bacteria that induce important inflammatory reactions so as to generate even disfiguring lesions.
Mixed : it differs from all the forms described because it is characterized by the simultaneous presence of very oily and acne-prone areas, and other extremely arid and dry areas. Therefore, dry skin and seborrheic skin coexist in combination skin.
What are the right products for oily skin? For cleansing are mild detergents. Ideal are micellar waters, oils or cleansing milks.
For daily hydration, focus on creams, gels or emulsions with a light texture. In the morning and in the evening it is important to spread a light moisturizer for oily skin on the face, as even oily skin is sensitive and needs hydration and nourishment. It may seem strange but hydration is the key to keeping sebum under control. For the day, choose a sebum-balancing and soothing cream , while for the night, opt for a non-greasy cream with soothing ingredients in order to treat the skin with great gentleness. The ideal moisturizer for those with oily skin must be able to combine the astringent and opacifying action with the moisturizing one. The products for oily skin are formulated with active ingredients with antibacterial and sebum-rebalancing properties.
Those with oily skin can apply a lightly exfoliating product in the evening that contains glycolic or salicylic acid which acts on the sebaceous glands, reducing sebum production. In the morning instead, after cleansing, a moisturizer with a purifying action.
Facial care can also be integrated with a light textured sebum-regulating serum to refine the texture of the pores, especially in the summer months, when sweat and heat do not help improve the skin.
